Letter: N-word never acceptable
Friday, Aug. 4, 2000 | 9:09 a.m.
By referring to "some people" as "niggers," Clark County School District Superintendent Carlos Garcia has told all children (and adults) that it's OK to call people "niggers" as long as they "deserve" to be so called.
Then he says he apologizes "if" he offended anyone.
His attempt at an apology is the more disturbing because it leaves no doubt that the leader of our schools has no historical understanding that an entire race of people have been referred to as "niggers" since slavery to try to convince people that somehow blacks were deserving of their treatment.
In addition, Garcia fails to grasp that the term "nigger" is unacceptable in any context.
Garcia then states that he welcomes dialogue with anyone who was offended, and that he wishes someone had called him to talk about his remarks. Incredible!
Is he really unaware that every day in America every black person experiences some kind of prejudice?
Is he saying that there are some people who deserve to be treated in a less humane way than others?
Garcia does not need more education; he does not need dialogue; he does not need more sensitivity training; he just needs to be gone from Clark County schools.
