Letter: Garcia’s remark not intended to be racist
Friday, Aug. 4, 2000 | 9:09 a.m.
Once again the media in Las Vegas has demonstrated its abysmal ignorance and despicable thirst for scandalous headlines.
Carlos Garcia's remarks were perfectly understandable and devoid of racial implications. If your reporters were literate they would have understood the reference to "nigger" and applauded him instead of attacking him.
His choice of words was perfectly applicable within the context of his statement. Teachers often point out the real meaning of the word without being accused of racial prejudice.
At a time when the Clark County School District is facing so many critical issues, we all, especially the media, should be supportive of the new superintendent and look for positive incidents instead of jeopardizing the entire district's future.
The reporters in Clark County need to be sent back to school for basic English or at the very least ethics in the public arena.
