Kyle Busch suspended by speedway officials

Thursday, Aug. 3, 2000 | 10:51 a.m.

Kyle Busch will not be allowed to compete in the NASCAR Grand American Modified division at The Bullring at Las Vegas Motor Speedway or IMCA Modified division at the speedway's dirt track until May 2, 2001, speedway officials announced Wednesday.

NASCAR and IMCA rules require all competitors in the modified divisions to be at least 16 years old.

"Anyone who competes at Las Vegas Motor Speedway is required to show proof of age upon request," said David Stetzer, director of short-track events. "Earlier this season Kyle's father (Tom Busch) presented a copy of his son's birth certificate verifying his age as 16. In the past week new information has become available that questioned the validity of his age. After a call to Clark County Vital Records Bureau, we discovered Kyle's true birthdate to be May 2, 1985."

Track officials disallowed Busch's points and suspended him from racing in the modified divisions until he turns 16. Busch was sixth in points at The Bullring and 21st at the dirt track.

Busch will be allowed to compete in the Hitchin' Post/Exiss Legends Cars division, in which drivers are required to be 12.

NASCAR, IMCA and further track penalties are pending.
