County Commission OKs schools’ zoning

Thursday, Aug. 3, 2000 | 11:12 a.m.

Clark County commissioners on Wednesday approved zoning for two new elementary schools in the western Las Vegas Valley.

The commissioners approved zoning for two 62,500-square- foot schools, one on 16 acres on Diablo Avenue between the Las Vegas Beltway and Riley Street and the other on 15 acres on Park Street between Tropical Parkway and Bright Angel Way.

Matthew La Croix, representing the Clark County School District, said the new schools are necessary to relieve overcrowding in other schools in the fast-growing area.

Anthony Ricco, with Diversified Realty, opposed the zone change for the school at Diablo and Riley. He said the school would be almost completely surrounded by commercial and industrial zoning.

He also argued that the school location was inappropriate because it is in the McCarran International Airport flight path and students will be distracted by noise.

Approval will also limit the development options for restaurants in the area because liquor licenses are prohibited within 1,500 feet of a school, Ricco said.

Commissioners Lance Malone and Mary Kincaid said they were concerned about the commercial and industrial character of the area, but the need for schools outweighed the disadvantages of the site.

Commissioners passed both zoning changes 4-0.
