Agustin A. Orci, a Las Vegas hotel executive who has served as superintendent of two school districts, has become the first appointment of new Clark County School District Superintendent Carlos Garcia.
Orci, who received a doctoral degree in education administration from UNLV in 1980 and currently works for Bally's and Paris hotel-casinos as executive director, will serve as assistant superintendent of elementary education.
He was superintendent of Northside Independent School District in San Antonio, Texas, from 1994 to 1995, and Tempe, Ariz., School District No. 3 from 1988 to 1993. Orci was unanimously approved last week by the School Board.
This is Orci's second stint with Clark County schools. He served as associate superintendent for instruction from 1984 to 1988. He also was director of education for the Mirage from 1996 to 1999 before going to Bally's and Paris.
A 1965 graduate of Northern Arizona University, where he received a bachelor's degree in elementary education and social studies, Orci received a master's degree in reading and counseling at the University of Arizona in 1967.
Orci will earn $99,492 a year plus $2,300 for longevity and $500 for his doctoral degree, according to the school district.
