Revised ordinance on bathhouses OK'd
The Clark County Commission agreed to a revised ordinance regulating bathhouses Tuesday, but it isn't likely to affect any bathhouses since there are none in unincorporated Clark County.
Business Licensing Director Ardel Jorgenson said the ordinance was rewritten as a precautionary measure. The last licensed bathhouse that operated in the county was in the mid-1980's, she said.
The code was made more strict because bathhouses in the past have tended to be used inappropriately, Jorgenson said.
"We want to ensure if we do get someone who wants to open a bathhouse, it will be maintained in a professional manner," she said.
Sides drawn in making arguments
Six community members were chosen to write arguments supporting and opposing an $80 million bond issue for a children's hospital that is scheduled to appear on the November general election ballot.
The three selected to support the authorization of the bonds are Suzanne Brunner, a community activist who has worked on issues such as flood control and traffic; Dr. Alvin Blumberg, the Latin Chamber of Commerce's "physician of the year" in 1996; and Dr. Lawrence Satkowiak, president of the Las Vegas Pediatric Society.
Committee members opposed to the bond issue are Dr. Ronald Oseas, medical director of the Pediatric and Adolescent Oncology, Hematology and Immunology Center; A. Allan Stipe, chief executive officer of Sunrise Children's Hospital and Carole Vilardo, a member of the Nevada Taxpayers Association.
