Downtown parking fee increase proposed

The Las Vegas City Council is considering a measure to double the hourly fees on downtown parking meters to $1.
City officials say the increase is needed to help pay for downtown's growth.
The 50 cent fee increase would raise more than $865,000 a year for the city's parking enterprise fund, officials estimate. The extra money will be used, in part, to pay the debt on three new parking garages the city is building as part of its downtown redevelopment effort.
The enterprise fund takes in $5 million a year, mostly through meter fees and parking fines. About $1 million of that comes from renting garages to the Four Queens and Lady Luck casinos.
If the City Council approves the increase Wednesday, it will be the second time in four years that meter fees have doubled. They were raised to their current level from 25 cents per hour in 1996.
