Clark County Commissioner Yvonne Atkinson Gates formally kicked off her campaign for the 2000 election with a rally and barbecue Saturday at Clarence Ray Memorial Park.
Atkinson Gates said she chose to celebrate her bid for re-election in the park adjacent to the Yvonne Atkinson Gates Early Childhood Development Center because it showcased two of the more significant neighborhood projects she has completed during her term.
Atkinson Gates is expected to face North Las Vegas City Councilman John Rhodes in the Democratic primary for District D, which includes much of North Las Vegas.
"When I was first elected to the commission, District D was sorely neglected when it came to funding for these types of projects," she said, referring to the park and development center.
Atkinson Gates said that during her two terms on the board she has battled to obtain federal funds for projects desperately needed in the community. She said North Las Vegas has been designated an enterprise district and will receive $2.9 million annually to assist with programs targeting community safety, youths, job training and small-business development.
