Wynn buys Desert Inn

Thursday, April 27, 2000 | 6:15 a.m.

Steve Wynn has acquired the Desert Inn hotel-casino for an undisclosed price, a spokesman for Wynn said Thursday evening.

"Steve confirmed today he has purchased the assets of the Desert Inn, which includes the hotel, the golf course and the undeveloped land from Starwood (Hotels & Resorts Worldwide Inc.) as a birthday present for his wife Elaine, whose birthday is tomorrow," the spokesman said. "Mr. and Mrs. Wynn are the only shareholders."

The spokesman said the deal is conditioned on the successful completion of Mirage Resorts' merger with MGM Grand Inc. Immediate confirmation of the deal from Starwood was not available.

Alan Feldman, a spokesman for Mirage Resorts, called the deal "good news all around."

"(Mirage Resorts and MGM Grand) gave Mr. Wynn their approval to negotiate this transaction," Feldman said. "We all certainly think it's going to be a great benefit to have him as a next-door neighbor."
