Fake credit cards used in casino
Two men using fake credit cards attempted to get $4,000 in cash advances from a Las Vegas casino, according to a federal grand jury indictment filed Wednesday.
Luiz Antonio Camilo Pedroso de Campos and Gilson Iwamoto were indicted on charges of conspiracy and attempting to use a counterfeit access device.
The indictment alleges Iwamoto and de Campos, both of Rio de Janeiro, used counterfeit Visa cards issued by Banco Real International on April 12 in an attempt to get cash advances from Caesars Palace.
Also indicted Wednesday were Miguel Medina-Soto and Nixon Ochoa-DeLeon on a charge of transporting illegal aliens.
Description of suspect outlined
Metro Police have developed a description of a man believed to have been involved in the robbery and stabbing of a Las Vegas man on April 5.
A Nevada Power Co. employee was working at a power substation in the 900 block of East Flamingo Road at about 11 a.m. when he was hit in the face and knocked down by another man, Metro Police robbery detectives said.
As the worker started to get up, the suspect jumped on him, took his wallet and stabbed him, police said.
The suspect is described as dark, 40 to 50 years old, between 6 feet and 6 feet 2 and weighing about 195 pounds. He has a full beard and was last seen wearing a blue shirt and black shoes with a white logo.
The victim is recovering. Anyone with information is asked to call robbery detectives at 229-3591 or Secret Witness at 385-5555.
Temperatures threaten records
If Las Vegas Valley temperatures reach 97 degrees today, it will tie a record set in 1992.
The all-time record high for the month reached 99 degrees on April 3, 1981.
Thermometers in Southern Nevada this week have hovered 12 to 15 degrees above normal. Average highs and lows for this time of year are 81 degrees and 54 degrees.
The weather is expected to chill out Friday, Saturday and Sunday as a cold front sweeps in from the Pacific Northwest. Weekend highs should range from 84 to 88 degrees.
Carey branch to receive repairs
Beginning Saturday the North Las Vegas branch of the Department of Motor Vehicles and Public Safety, 4012 W. Carey Ave., will be closed for a remodeling project.
New counters, tile, carpeting and paint will be part of the $158,000 project that also includes a new information center, DMV spokesman Kevin Malone said.
Friday will be the last day of business at the branch. The office is scheduled to reopen on May 22.
