Letter: Medical research gets boost from Nevada senators

They supported an amendment that provided an additional $1.7 billion to the budget allocation for the National Institutes of Health, bringing that organization's increase to $2.7 billion (15 percent).
In public opinion polls commissioned by Research America, respondents around the country have endorsed doubling taxpayer-supported medical research over five years by a margin of 2-1. The current budget increase marks the third consecutive year of progress toward that goal.
The NIH and other federal agencies that support medical, health-related, and basic-science research are making great strides in finding new treatments, new prevention and new cures for disease.
These organizations are helping make America healthy.
Many diseases, such as polio, have been all but eliminated in this country through the advances of medical and scientific research. But there is much work left to do. With the support of Bryan and Reid, as well as others among the leadership in Congress and the White House, the NIH will continue its efforts to improve the quality of life and health for all Americans.
