Sierra season winding down as spring arrives

Tuesday, April 25, 2000 | 2:30 a.m.

Skiers and snowboarders expecting a nice spring day before the end of the ski season were out of luck at Squaw Valley on Saturday, but got in some good runs on the resort's final day Sunday.

Saturday started out with high winds and dense, dark clouds. By noon, the clouds had dropped halfway down the mountains, dropping wind-lashed snow and rain and sending many scrambling down the mountain to escape the weather.

Sunshine returned on Sunday, although winds picked up again in the afternoon.

Soda Springs and Sugar Bowl also wrapped up their seasons on Sunday. Northstar-at-Tahoe and Sierra-at-Tahoe shut down the lifts on Monday.

Kirkwood and Mt. Rose have scheduled an end to operations on Wednesday.

Resorts without a closing date announced include Alpine Meadows, Heavenly, Boreal, Donner Ski Ranch and Squaw Valley.
