Trial date set for Nellis airman

An October trial date has been set for a Nellis Air Force Base airman accused of suffocating her newborn daughter in December.

District Judge Mark Gibbons set an Oct. 9 trial date for Candice Kitto, 23, after she pleaded not guilty Wednesday morning to an open murder charge.

According to police, Kitto called the Mike O'Callaghan Federal Hospital Dec. 9 complaining of an illness. After being taken to the hospital by paramedics, doctors realized she had lost a great deal of blood because she had recently given birth.

When Kitto was asked where the child was, she told them it was in her closet and base police, an ambulance crew and a nurse found the child in a plastic garbage bag in the closet, police said.

An autopsy revealed the baby girl had been born healthy and toxicology and tissue tests ruled out the possibility that the child had died as the result of a birth defect or natural cause.

Kitto was arrested and charged with murder after the autopsy results came back in March.
