Woodbury files for re-election

Clark County Commission Chairman Bruce Woodbury, who in two decades on the board has gained the reputation as "the voice of reason," has announced his intention to file for re-election in Commission District A.

Woodbury, who turns 55 this year, will seek his sixth term as commissioner. He also is chairman of the Regional Transportation Commission and a senior founding member of the Regional Flood Control District.

Woodbury, a Republican, says the need to deal with a wide range of issues facing his district helped to push him toward re-election.

"This is a critical time in the evolution of our community when we must consistently address the challenges brought on by growth and our robust economy," Woodbury said.

In addition to his work on the RTC and with Regional Flood Control, Woodbury is credited with improving local traffic systems and pushing through the Clean Air Action Plan and the Taxpayers Bill of Rights.

District A encompasses Boulder City and Henderson, including Green Valley.

Koivisto announces

Assemblywoman Ellen Koivisto, D-Las Vegas, said Monday she would run for a third term in Assembly District 14.

Koivisto said one priority for the 2001 Legislature will be to prohibit courts from charging a filing fee before issuing protective orders in domestic violence cases.

"Quite often the people who find themselves in a situation in which they need to file a protective order do not have the money to pay a filing fee," she said. "It was not the Legislature's intent to make it more difficult to get a protective order. Rather the intent was to make it easier," she said.
