Oregon’s Larwin wins Greco-Roman award

Luke Larwin of Bend, Ore., was named outstanding wrestler at the Western Junior Regional Greco-Roman Championships on Wednesday at the Convention Center.

Larwin pinned 1999 junior national champion Josh McLay of Hastings, Minn., in 2:45 in the gold medal match at 165 pounds. McLay was also the defending Western Regional champion.

The only athlete to win the Western Juniors for the second straight year was Nate Gallick of Tucson, Ariz., who claimed the 114 1/2-pound title. Gallick pinned Quincey Osborn of Minnesota in the finals in 3:47.

Also on Wednesday, Brent Shiver of Washington, D.C., was named outstanding wrestler at the U.S. Deaf National Greco-Roman Wrestling Championships.

Shiver claimed the 167 1/2-pound title, defeating Jeff Courtney of Fairmont, W. Va., in the gold-medal finals, 8-3. Shiver also claimed the most falls award, pinning two opponents in 2:31. Shiver is a former Division I wrestler for Northwestern University.

Also claiming a gold medal was former deaf world champion Matt Hamill of Largo, Fla., the 213 3/4-pound champion.

Hamill won two matches, including a 4-0 decision over runner-up K. Dzougouton of Arlington, Va. Hamill is a former Div. III national champion from RIT.

Other individual champions included Albert Sachs of Petaluma, Calif., at 119 pounds, Tariber Tabolov of Russia at 138 3/4 pounds, Toselli Silvestri of Washington, D.C., at 152 pounds, Vincent Silvestri at 187 1/4 pounds and Teddie Barnett of Paola, Kan., at 286.

It is the first time that the U.S. Deaf Nationals has been held alongside USA Wrestling's National Championships, which begin Friday.

The gold-medal matches in the freestyle competition of the U.S. Deaf Nationals begin Saturday.
