Roundabouts set for Carey

North Las Vegas residents will soon find themselves going round and round when driving along Carey Avenue.

The council approved a $7,500 cooperative agreement to allow the Nevada Department of Transportation to construct traffic "roundabouts" at three intersections along Carey, at Belmont Street, Hamilton Street and Revere Street. The city will also kick in $12,500 for topographical survey work.

Although the project will be 95 percent funded through federal dollars, the city must provide a 5 percent match. Total estimated cost for the three traffic roundabouts is $400,000.

The roundabouts are similar to the traffic circles in Summerlin but are smaller and designed for traffic traveling at slower speeds.

Widening project planned for Carey

The city will spend $581,000 on two projects with the Nevada Department of Transportation.

About $177,200 will fund widening of Carey Avenue from Rancho Drive to Clayton Street. The project includes adding four lanes, raised median islands and landscaping.

Another $403,700 will fund widening of Martin Luther King Boulevard from Carey to Cheyenne Avenue.

Plan for regional facility considered

The council has approved a resolution to explore the feasibility of building and operating a regional animal shelter.

As of April 4, 1990, the city has contracted with Dewey Animal Shelter to provide services. One proposed option being considered through the resolution is to study the feasibility of one large, centralized shelter operated by Clark County, Las Vegas and North Las Vegas.

According to staff reports, the benefit of a regional animal shelter is increased efficiency for residents in the three jurisdictions who have lost a pet and cost effectiveness due to a reduction of duplicate services.
