NLV recreation center plan moves ahead

North Las Vegas is moving ahead with construction of a new recreation center to be built in 18 to 20 months.

A motion to rescind an earlier vote approving the center was withdrawn by Councilwoman Stephanie Smith.

Last week council members expressed concern over Smith's request for a revote, fearing it would slow the process that has already had its share of speed bumps.

Since September the council has gone back and forth between two architects and two design concepts before deciding April 5 to sign a $414,000 agreement with the firm that designed the Black Mountain Recreation Center in Henderson.

Originally the $5 million center was going to be modeled on the Desert Breeze Recreation Center, 8275 Spring Mountain Road, using its specifications and architect, Lucchesi Galati Architects Inc.

When the council voted to switch to HSA Architects last month, it also adopted the Black Mountain center concept, and the project grew from 22,000 square feet to 41,000. The cost grew to about $7.8 million.

Smith said last week that she wanted to reconsider the vote because of the increased cost.
