Visitors to pay for emergency services

The law requires out-of-county residents to be billed for services provided by the Ely Volunteer Fire Department.
City Clerk Brent Hutchings said White Pine County residents already pay for the services through property taxes and won't be affected by the proposal.
With approval of the ordinance, Ely joins communities statewide that charge non-local residents for services.
"We need to defray costs wherever we can," Hutchings said. "We don't have the financial ability to provide services forever to non-county residents without reimbursement."
