Las Vegas student is applauded at Solar Energy Science Contest

Tuesday, April 18, 2000 | 10:21 a.m.

Tyler Benson, a sixth-grade student at Swainston Middle School, won first-place honors in a Solar Energy Science Contest for building a solar energy-powered battery charger.

The Corporation for Solar Technology and Renewable Resources Contest, supported by the Clark County School District, challenged students to come up with an idea for everyday use of solar technology.

Students built a model of their science project and provided a description of the use for solar energy. Twenty-three students entered.

Nevada Power Co. hosted a luncheon for the three winners. The students each received a trophy, a pass to the Adventure Dome at Circus Circus and were awarded savings bonds.
