Anchorman to host youth event
The 21st annual Search for Talent will begin 7 p.m. Saturday at the Reed Whipple Cultural Center, 821 Las Vegas Blvd. North, with the area finale. Master of ceremonies Kendall Tenney, news anchor at KVBC Channel 3, will introduce the finalists in three divisions: primary (6-9 years olds), junior (10-14) and senior (15-18).
Search for Talent is sponsored by the Cultural and Community Affairs Division of the city of Las Vegas Department of Leisure Services. Winners in each division will be invited to perform in the 2000-2001 cultural season's community showcase.

Retirees to offer 'new business' lab
The Las Vegas Chapter of Service Corps of Retired Executives will present a "Starting A New Business" workshop 8:30 a.m. Thursday at the Foley Federal Building, 300 Las Vegas Blvd. South, Suite 1100.
Score counselors will cover marketing, cash flow, record keeping, the business plan and a checklist for licensing, permits and other requirements.
Cost is $30 if prepaid or $35 at the door. Call 388-6104.
Car club sponsors party, fund-raiser
The eighth annual "Fun in the Sun" Herb Hall Memorial Auto Show will begin Friday, with a welcome party and registration. Admission is free.
The event -- sponsored by the Southern Nevada Chapter of the Studebaker's Club -- features a car show and swap meet and a barbecue dinner. A local student will benefit with a scholarship from this event.
All makes of cars are welcome. Call Loraine Hall at 642-2643.
A Chili Challenge cook-off will follow Saturday, sponsored by the Green Chili Association. Set-up begins at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, and judging is at 2 p.m.
Cost to enter a green chili is $50 for nonmembers and includes membership to the association. Fee to cook red chili is $15. Tasting is free.
Proceeds will benefit Shade Tree Shelter for Women.

Students unveil research projects
UNLV graduate students will present their research to peers, professors and the Southern Nevada community 9 a.m.-noon Saturday in the Moyer Student Union, Room 202, 203 and 204. The public is invited.

Rec center provides blossoming event
A floral design workshop will be offered 9:30 a.m.-noon Tuesday at the Silver Springs Recreation Center, 1951 Silver Springs Parkway, Henderson.
Enrollment is open to people 16 and older. Registration is $20.
A list of required supplies will be provided at registration. The workshop is sponsored by the City of Henderson Parks and Recreation Department.

LV youths cap science event
Four Hyde Park Middle School students became semifinalists in the Bayer / National Science Foundation Award for Community Innovation, for designing a specialized cap that would replace the caps currently used on toxic household chemicals.
The nationwide competition challenges students to use science and technology to develop solutions to community issues.
Team members include Ann Nowinski, Ashley Crowther, Ariana Rigg and Tierra McCullah.
Nearly 2,000 entries were submitted and judged by scientists across the nation.
On April 17, 10 of the 30 semifinalist teams will be selected as winners of an all-expense-paid trip to Epcot Center at the Walt Disney World Resort, where they will compete in the national championship June 20-26.
Students take honors at geography competition
Two Las Vegas eighth graders won top honors at the 12th annual Nevada State Geographic Bee. Alex Harris, an eighth grader at Molasky Middle School, won top honors and will go to Washington next month to compete in the national finals, sponsored by the National Geographic Society.
Nicholas Smith, an eighth grader at Becker Middle School, took second place, and T.J. Tutay, a seventh grader at Little Flower School in Reno, took third in the state competition held April 7 at UNLV.
