"I made a commitment to improve service at the DMV and having these additional workers on board will have a positive impact for everyone who has to interact with this agency," he said Thursday.
The governor moved to reduce waiting times after problems with the agency's new Project Genesis computer system, launched in September, resulted in long lines and delays of several hours for people registering cars and getting licenses.
Guinn got funds from the Legislature's Interim Finance Committee to hire more DMV employees. Some began work last week in Las Vegas, while others will go to work April 24.
New workers also will be on the job at the agency's offices in Carson City, Reno and Fallon. The Henderson office will expand its daily hours and start Saturday service this week.
Guinn said 35 percent to 50 percent of the people in lines don't have to be there. If customers have a simple vehicle registration renewal, they can renew by mail.
In the next couple of months, the agency will start programs to allow people to register vehicles and renew driver's licenses over the Internet, by phone and at smog emission stations.
