Rebels competing in 2 track meets
Thursday, April 13, 2000 | 10:37 a.m.
Fresh off its victory in the UNLV Invitational, the Rebels' track and field team will head to Southern California this weekend where UNLV athletes will scatter between two meets.
UNLV will split its squad between the prestigious Mt. San Antonio College Relays and the Long Beach Invitational. The majority of the team will compete in Long Beach on Saturday, while the Rebels' NCAA hopefuls will look for an added challenge at the Mt. SAC Relays on Friday and Saturday.
In their most recent outing, the Rebels beat Idaho 171-165 to win their own UNLV Invitational.
Michele Davis ran NCAA provisional qualifying times in winning both the 200 and 400 meters. Ayanna Hutchinson won the 100 meters, Katie Barto captured the 3,000 meters and Heather Steadham won the long jump.
Junior pole vaulter Charlotte McGee broke her own school record with a vault of 10-11.74 and finished second in the event.
Glaser is a 6-foot-6 post player and will enroll at UNLV as a freshman next fall.
UNLV is 10-25 overall and 3-10 in the Mountain West Conference. The Rebels are last in the six-team conference and trail league-leading New Mexico by 8 1/2 games. The Cougars are 22-17 overall and 10-5 in the conference and are in second place, 2 1/2 games out of first.
The Rebels return home Tuesday for a two-game nonconference series against Southern Colorado and a three-game series against conference rival Utah.
UNLV also will play host to league-leading New Mexico in a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. Sunday.
In singles, Malec moved up 10 spots to No. 27 nationally. The native of Warsaw, Poland, has won 11 consecutive matches and all of her losses have come against nationally ranked players.
In doubles, Malec and partner Marianne Bakken improved 14 spots to No. 20 after downing the still-No. 1-ranked team in the nation from the University of San Diego on April 2. Malec and Bakken, who are 21-3, have not lost a match since February 25.
The women's team (11-9) dropped four spots to No. 65. The Rebels are off until they host Wyoming in the regular-season finale on April 25.
