Meese steps down as Reno police chief

Thursday, April 13, 2000 | 12:35 p.m.

Acting Police Chief Mike Meese is back in his No. 2 spot and is sharing administrative duties with two other senior officers until a permanent chief is in place.

Meese took over the leadership of the department in March but has returned to his old job of assistant chief.

Lts. Paul George and Todd Renwick will take on additional administrative responsibilities until a full-time police chief is found.

Meese has been under fire for the last two months. He was investigated for allegedly shoving past a ticket-taker during the Elton John concert at Lawlor Events Center in February, but the state attorney general's office found insufficient evidence to prosecute him.

Allegations of other improprieties also have surfaced, but none has been directly linked to Meese. Some have not been made public.
