Letter: Law enforcement in Mexico a sham
Thursday, April 13, 2000 | 9:40 a.m.
There will probably be the usual expressions of injured pride, and someone will list an impressive number of fleeing felons returned to the United States, while never mentioning that almost none of them are ethnically Mexican.
Oh, yes, we do have a kind of extradition agreement with Mexico, but it's just as specious as the annual certification of Mexico as cooperating with the war on drugs.
Other than their fear of each other, extradition to the United States -- where they cannot buy a juror or threaten a judge -- is the one thing Mexican drug lords fear most.
If local law enforcement shows any cooperation in helping to extradite someone to the United States, his loyalty is in doubt and his life is in danger.
It's as simple as that and the situation is getting worse.
