Sparks sergeant turns self in on stalking accusations

Wednesday, April 12, 2000 | 10:37 a.m.

Reno police have been investigating the accusations and he surrendered late Monday after two arrest warrants were issued by Sparks Municipal Court.

Gentry, who denies the charges filed by a 17-year-old woman and a 23-year-old, was freed Tuesday afternoon after posting $5,000 bail.

Gentry's discrimination suit against the city ended in a hung jury last month. One of his attorneys contends that the women may have been put up to making the allegations.

Gentry, 40, has been on paid administrative leave during the investigation, which began last month.

Gentry, who is black, sued the city in 1998 after failing to be promoted to sergeant the year before. Jurors failed to reach a verdict last month and a new trial has been set for October. He was promoted to sergeant last November.

His attorneys argued that Sparks practiced "institutional racism" and that Gentry's qualifications exceeded those of three white officers promoted ahead of him.
