School shooter enters plea in another case

An 18-year-old man will spend the next four to 20 years in prison as a result of a plea bargain reached today in the shooting of two teenagers.
Maynor Villanueva pleaded guilty to attempted murder with the use of a deadly weapon this morning during an arraignment before District Judge John McGroarty.
The shooting was on Oct. 2, just nine days before Villanueva and a juvenile accomplice were involved in a similar but much more highly publicized shooting at Clark High School, for which Villanueva already has pleaded guilty.
The plea bargain in the shooting at 1005 Magnolia Ave. means Villaneuva may get two to 10 years in prison for attempted murder and another two to 10 years for use of a deadly weapon when he is sentenced May 24. The sentences are to run consecutively, according to the bargain.
In exchange for the admission of guilt, the district attorney's office will not seek gang-related enhancements that could have added significant prison time.
In the Clark High School shooting, Villanueva faces the possibility of life in prison with or without parole because of a new law that stiffens penalties for a non-fatal shooting on school grounds.
Villanueva is the first to be sentenced under the law that went into effect Oct. 1 and has yet to stand up to a challenge before the Nevada Supreme Court.
Tony Tejada, 14, is charged as an juvenile in the Oct. 11 Clark High shooting, but as an adult in the Magnolia Avenue shooting where a 16-year-old boy was shot in the arm and a 16-year-old girl was shot in the back.
