The grand jury Tuesday indicted dentist Thomas Gonzales and IRS employee Donald Hyde on allegations the dentist offered free dental service and free golf at an exclusive course in return for reduction of Gonzales' tax liabilities.
"I think this is a sad day for the Internal Revenue Service enforcement program," said Assistant U.S. Attorney Ray Rukstele, who is prosecuting the case. "But before any cynics take any glee in the grand jury action today, I would ensure everyone that integrity is and continues to be the hallmark of the Internal Revenue Service."
The grand jury indicted Gonzales, 50, and Hyde, 52, each on one count of conspiracy. The panel also indicted Gonzales on one count of bribery of a public official and Hyde on one count of acceptance of a bribe by a public official.
According to the indictment, Gonzales and Hyde had conspired since Aug. 1, 1997, to engage in the bribery scheme. During the conspiracy, according to the indictment, Gonzales inccurred a liability of more than $100,000 in taxes and penalties.
