Assault suspect pleads not guilty

Wednesday, April 12, 2000 | 10:56 a.m.

A convicted sex offender who is charged with fondling one patient at Summerlin Medical Center and sexually assaulting another is scheduled to go to jury trial on May 31 -- four days after the one-year anniversary of the incident.

Roy Alan O'Guinn, 38, pleaded not guilty Tuesday during an arraignment before District Judge Jeffrey Sobel to felony charges of sexual assault on a victim 65 years or older and burglary and a gross misdemeanor charge of open or gross lewdness.

The charges stem from a May 27, 1999, incident in which a man walked into the hospital room of one patient at the hospital, fondled her and then left when she paged a nurse for help. The man then went to the room of a 67-year-old patient and sexually assaulted her, Metro Police said.

Police records show O'Guinn was convicted of sex crimes in California in 1980 and in Nevada in 1989.

According to police, O'Guinn, a North Las Vegas resident, was detained by hospital security and charged with five counts of sexual assault. He has been in custody at the Clark County Detention Center since he was arrested.

In March one of the victims and her husband filed a lawsuit against O'Guinn and the Summerlin Medical Center, claiming the hospital's negligence lead to her sexual assault. A similar lawsuit was filed by the other victim in December.
