With five days left to mail in 2000 Census forms, parts of Nevada are already doing better than the 1990 Census mail-in response rate.
Elko County is the first county in the state to improve upon the 1990 mail-in response, with 56 percent of the forms returned. The 1990 rate was 54 percent.
Clark County was at 55 percent as of Thursday, compared to a 60 percent response rate in 1990. Most improved in the county is the city of Mesquite, which has a mail-in rate of 54 percent compared to 45 percent in 1990.
"Compared to 1990 figures, Nevada has shown the seventh-best improvement in numbers so far," said David Byerman, the U.S. Census Bureau's chief government liaison to Nevada.
Byerman urged people to mail in their forms.
People have until Tuesday to put the forms in the mail.
