Savvy wine buy: La Grola ‘94 Valpolicella
Wednesday, April 5, 2000 | 9:13 a.m.
Valpolicella is a red wine of extremely varied quality from Italy's northeast, and low quality labels have flooded U.S. markets for decades. Allegrini is one of the region's leading producers, though, and this fruity, mildly alcoholic and eminently drinkable wine is a terrific value. Italians drink Valpolicella with cooked meats and cheeses. When the grape is dried before vinification, it is used to make the powerfully concentrated, luxurious and often high-priced wine called Amarone.
Available at Las Vegas Wine Co., $12.99, and Spirits Plus, $15.99.
