Letter: Miami is still a part of the United States

Wednesday, April 5, 2000 | 9:40 a.m.

Is Miami now seceding from the Union? You may not think this crisis involves all Americans, but it does.

Are these Cuban-Americans in Miami hoping we go to war with Cuba over a youngster just to get rid of Castro? I'm very familiar with those people, and when Castro relinquishes power, Miami will empty out like a ballpark. Not too many years ago these were the same people who came here to become citizens and took a pledge to the United States to uphold the laws of the land. Now they and the mayor of Miami want to defy the immigration law and fight the government.

Freedom has its limits. Have they forgotten how it was at home? I'm beginning to wonder who is running our country, the government or the Cubans. Because of their hatred toward Castro, they don't care how this little escapade could affect the country.

I feel sorry for the Gonzalez boy, but what makes him so different from others who come here, only to be sent back home? I thought kids were supposed to be with their next of kin.

What's worse, some of our people now running for office are sticking their nose where it doesn't belong, and agree to breaking this law. What has this nation come to?

I think it's time our government tells the citizens of Miami they're still in the state of Florida, governed by the United States of America.

And for those Cuban-Americans who wish to retaliate, put them on a slow boat back to Cuba. There are only 50 stars on the flag.
