Monday, April 3, 2000 | 9:53 a.m.
Former Rep. John Ensign, a Las Vegas Republican, raised more than twice as much campaign money as did Democrat Ed Bernstein through Friday in their bid for the U.S. Senate.
The first quarter reports for the 2000 election aren't due until April 15, but Ensign will report that he has raised about $2.5 million. Bernstein, a Las Vegas attorney, has raised $1.1 million. That includes $700,000 over the past three months, $500,000 of which came from his personal accounts.
Ensign, a veterinarian and former gaming executive who served in Congress from 1995 through 1998, raised more than $400,000 over the past three months but is not yet prepared to disclose his cash on hand. Bernstein said he has more than $1 million cash-on-hand.
Both men are running for the seat being vacated by Sen. Richard Bryan, D-Nev.
GOP nominees
Registered Republicans who were not able to attend the Clark County Precinct Meeting on Feb. 23 may still nominate themselves to be a delegate to the County Convention April 21-22. Deadline for self-nomination is April 14.
Delegates to the County Convention are eligible to be delegates to the Nevada State Convention, which sends delegates to the national convention.
