Letter: Pet ownership is big responsibility
Thursday, Sept. 30, 1999 | 9:52 a.m.
Please think seriously about the long-term commitment required before getting a pet, no matter what type. Owning an animal, whether a dog, cat or monkey, is a major responsibility. It should not be viewed as a "purchase" that can be returned if too much trouble, or not quite exactly what you had in mind. Consider all aspects of pet ownership, especially when taking a nondomesticated animal into your home.
People need to recognize owning an animal is a commitment much like having a child. It will require lifestyle changes, medical care, financial expenditures, patience and love. If you're ready to commit, please visit a local shelter to adopt one of the many animals, both purebred and mixed, that are available at the shelters. You will be saving the life of an animal condemned to die whose only crime was being born in a society that views animals as objects to be discarded when no longer wanted. And if you already have a pet, please spay or neuter it -- you'll be preventing the needless suffering of animals instead of contributing to the massive pet overpopulation problem.
