CARSON CITY -- Sydney Wickliffe, who has worked for the state Gaming Control Board for 20 years as an auditor, was named to the $92,914-a-year job as director of the state Department of Business and Industry.

Wickliffe, Las Vegas, is deputy chief of the audit division. She succeeds Dan Tom, who died in June.

The appointment was announced Tuesday by Gov. Kenny Guinn, who said Wickliffe "has the experience and business savvy necessary to effectively lead," the department.

The agency oversees about 20 divisions, ranging from the Athletic Commission to the Insurance Division.

Wickliffe started work with the Gaming Control Board in June 1979 and became deputy chief in 1987. Her duties include overseeing audits of casinos with annual revenues in excess of $1 million. She was also involved in writing changes in gaming laws and regulations.

She has been a resident of Nevada since 1952, graduated from UNLV with a degree in business administration and is a certified public accountant. She said she hoped her regulatory and auditing experience "combined with good business sense, will serve the department well."
