Southwest Gas Corp. will be hosting a used-item sale to benefit the American Heart Association 7-11 a.m. Saturday at its corporate offices parking lot, 5241 Spring Mountain Road.

Seminar planned at Bible Visitors Center
A fishing seminar will be held at 7 p.m. Oct. 7 at the Alan Bible Visitors Center at Lake Mead National.
The seminar will include identification of the various species of fish found in Lake Mead and the correct techniques to catch them. Admission is free. Call 293-8029.
Bryan to be honored at eighth annual banquet
Committed 100 Men will present its eighth annual awards banquet 7 p.m. Oct. 9 at the Palace Station.
Sen. Richard Bryan will be honored. Committed 100 Men is a nonprofit agency that provides mentoring for black males ages 7 to 13 who live in households headed by single females. Call 593-5110.
Jewish Federation plans program at Venetian
The Women's Division of the Jewish Federation of Las Vegas is sponsoring a Women and Wellness program 6:30-8:30 p.m. Oct. 7 at The Venetian hotel-casino in the Palazzo E Room.
Canyon Ranch SpaClub dietitian Geri Lynn Grossan will be the featured speaker of the evening.

Gay community schedules event for cancer society
The Gay and Lesbian Community Center of Southern Nevada is hosting its first OctoberFest with craft fair, hay rides, games for kids and live music to benefit the American Cancer Society.
The event will be from noon until 8 p.m. Saturday at 912 E. Sahara Ave. Admission is free, and food will be sold. Call 733-9800.
Hep Fest on tap Saturday at Lorenzi Park
The National Hepatitis C Coalition is sponsoring the first Las Vegas Picnic and Hep Fest 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday at Lorenzi Park.
This day in the park will allow fellow hepatitis C patients and families the opportunity to come together to hear the latest in hepatitis C information and viewpoints from health care professionals and nationally known advocates. Call 433-1647.
Year of Older Persons
The Las Vegas Housing Authority and Our Community Partners are sponsoring a celebration of 1999 as the International Year of Older Persons 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Tuesday at the Charleston Heights Art Center, 830 S. Brush St. Call 642-8767.
Friends for Life project needs participants
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southern Nevada and the Nevada National Guard are looking for community members to participate in the Friends for Life mentor program that provides positive role models for youth.
Mentors would visit an elementary school in the Clark County School District for one hour each week.
The Nevada National Guard's Drug Demand Reduction Program, promoting a drug-free lifestyle for children, partners with Big Brothers Big Sisters in the Friends for Life program.

Donations sought for Goodwill work program
Goodwill of Southern Nevada and Weight Watchers are seeking donations for the Suited for Success Campaign.
The campaign helps people with disabilities begin new careers by providing them with professional clothes when they graduate from Goodwill's work adjustment program.
Last year more than 2,500 outfits were donated to the Suited for Success Campaign, Steve Chartrand, president and CEO of Goodwill, said.
Goodwill is a not-for-profit organization that provides training, employment and job placement services for the disabled.

Boxing club receives donation for computers
Nevada Bell awarded a $10,000 grant to the North Las Vegas Center Ring Boxing Club to purchase nine computers, two printers, one scanner and one laptop computer for the center's tutorial program.
The grant will help expand information resources and improve the academic skills of its students. The resources will also help them explore career possibilities.
Berkley appoints Illia to appointment committee
Rep. Shelley Berkley, D-Nev., has appointed Tony Illia to serve on the Military Academy Appointment Committee.
Illia is public relations director of the Associated General Contractors, Las Vegas Chapter.
