Letter: Bryan has helped national forests
Wednesday, Sept. 29, 1999 | 9:39 a.m.
The bipartisan amendment was cosponsored by Sens. Harry Reid, D-Nev., Peter Fitzgerald, R-Ill., Richard Durbin, D-Ill., and Ron Wyden, D-Ore. The groundbreaking legislation would have reduced timber subsidies on the national forests by $34 million. Disappointingly, the amendment lost by a slim margin.
During his Senate career, Bryan has led the charge against corporate welfare on our national forests. His leadership in this arena is unparalleled and will be sorely missed when he retires next year. We can only hope that other senators will champion Bryan's cause after his departure from the Senate.
Once again, we thank Bryan and Reid for their concern about the abuse of taxpayer dollars. We look forward to one more year of leadership from Bryan and his effort to eliminate corporate welfare and wasteful government spending from the U.S. Forest Service budget.
