Blind Center plans annual fall yard sale

The Las Vegas Blind Center will hold its fall fund-raising yard sale 8 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday at 1001 N. Bruce St.

The nonprofit organization provides free services to the blind and visually impaired. Call Catherine Law at 642-6000.

New residents invited to recreation center

The Black Mountain Recreation Center is hosting a newcomer's meeting for new Henderson residents 7 p.m. Friday at 599 Greenway Road.

The free event is sponsored by the Henderson Parks and Recreation Department and is designed to give new residents the opportunity to visit the Black Mountain Recreation Center and learn about the amenities and programs it offers. Call 565-2880.

Henderson recreation offers workshop Saturday

The Silver Springs Recreation Center will host a decorative tole painting workshop 1-4 p.m. Saturday at the center, 1951 Silver Springs Parkway.

Participants will discover the charm of tole painting and decorating objects with acrylic paint. The cost is $35 and is sponsored by the Henderson Parks and Recreation Department. For registration, call 435-3814.

Kesterson center sets two workshops Oct. 15

Two Chinese cooking workshops are being offered 6-9 p.m. Friday and Oct. 15 at the Lorna J. Kesterson Valley View Recreation Center, 500 Harris St.

Participation is $15 per workshop with an additional $5 fee for supplies.

Heart association to host competition

The Spirit of Giving is the theme of an art poster contest announced by the American Heart Association.

The winner will receive a $500 cash prize, made possible by a special grant from WSA. The contest opens Friday and all entries must be received at the American Heart Association by Dec. 1.

Help needed with student exchange program

World Heritage, a nonprofit student exchange program, is looking for community members to act as representatives.

Community representatives plan an annual orientation, meet with local high schools, provide counseling for students, screen host families and meet with exchange students once a month.

Representatives also attend an annual training meeting and report to a regional coordinator. An average of two hours a week is spent with the students.

The Armenian American Cultural and Religious Center will have a ground-breaking ceremony at 11 a.m. Sunday at 6080 S. Jones Blvd. Everyone is welcome. Call 655-9486.
