Woodard leaves behind a legacy of civil rights
Tuesday, Sept. 28, 1999 | 9:23 a.m.
One cannot discuss the history of civil rights in Nevada, in fact the United States, without focusing on Bertha Woodard. She breathed, lived and died civil rights, her lifetime a reflection of that history. A stalwart of the NAACP, she "bugged" everyone.
She was part of the groups that bugged the Legislature, bugged the casino industry, bugged the unions, bugged the schools -- bugged them to do the right thing. She bugged her peers to "keep their eyes on the prize"; she bugged youth to "grow up right," take community responsibility and execute their leadership skills. She never gave much ground, but she did it all as a lady.
There are many people throughout Nevada today who will remember her presence and strength. There are many more who will benefit from her actions. All of us should take a moment to learn from her. Good journey, sweet soul.
