Man surrenders after apartment standoff
Tuesday, Sept. 28, 1999 | 10:46 a.m.
A hostage situation in which a 1-month-old child was held by his father for several hours ended peacefully early this morning but not before more than 30 people were evacuated from an apartment complex.
Metro Police spokesman Steve Meriwether said the man, whose identity is being withheld pending the filing of charges, surrendered to SWAT team negotiators at about 1:15 a.m. and was turned over to mental health authorities for evaluation.
Meriwether said it is not yet known if the man will face charges once he is released from the hospital.
The incident began at about 9 p.m. in an apartment complex in the 5800 block of East Meikle Lane near North Sloan Lane and East Lake Mead Boulevard.
Meriwether said two females, the child and the male suspect were in the apartment when the man apparently became distraught over a domestic issue.
One of the women left the apartment and called police, who set up a perimeter around the complex and evacuated between 15 and 20 apartments.
The second woman, believed to be the child's mother, remained inside until after SWAT team negotiators arrived.
Eventually the woman was released, but the man continued to hold the child until after several more hours of negotiating.
"SWAT negotiators finally talked him out of the apartment, and he came out with his son. The son was unharmed," Meriwether said.
