Health care professionals can learn more about a new degree in health arts offered by the University of St. Francis at a series of informational meetings Saturday and Sunday at area hospitals.
The program offers health care professionals who have completed associate's degrees or hospital diplomas the opportunity to earn a bachelor of science degree by providing the liberal arts portion of their education.
The meetings Saturday are at 2 p.m. at Mountain View Hospital, 4:30 p.m. at Valley Hospital and 7 p.m. at the Henderson Convention Center. On Sunday the meetings are at noon at the Henderson Convention Center, 4 p.m at Desert Springs Hospital and 7 p.m. at Sunrise Hospital. Call (800) 726-2600.
City plans classes for 2- and 3-year-olds
The Las Vegas Department of Leisure Services is offering a new organized sports league for 2 and 3-year-olds whose parents want them to learn the basics of soccer.
The class, Diaper Dusters, will teach basics including scissor kicking and scoring the winning goal. The class is part of the T-Shirt Sports program offering children 7 and under organized play in soccer, T-ball, basketball and tennis leagues.
League play is held every Wednesday and Saturday in city parks. For information, call Cassandra Lewis at 229-2256.
Alzheimer's seminar
A free seminar on Alzheimer's disease is being offered 2-4 p.m. Thursday at the Canyon Gate Country Club, 2001 Canyon Gate Drive. Call Aegis of Las Vegas, 240-3070.
Phone directories
1999 phone directories can be purchased for $35 at the HELP of Southern Nevada office, 953B E. Sahara Ave., Suite 208, from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday through Friday.
UNLV clinic provides help for children
UNLV's Child School Refusal and Anxiety Disorders Clinic is offering help to children who have difficulty attending school because of anxiety and other problems.l
The clinic provides assessment and treatment for children ages 5 to 15 who suffer from specific fears, general anxiety, social anxiety, separation problems, attention-seeking problems or family problems.
Services are available through the end of December by calling 895-0813. Fees are based on each family's ability to pay.
Fremont St. Experience helps out Booker school
Through a $7,500 grant provided by Fremont Street Experience, Booker Elementary School, 2277 N. Martin Luther King Blvd., will have an outdoor courtyard on campus to serve as a reading area.
The 4,600 square-foot courtyard will have a quiet reading area and a reading amphitheater that will seat up to 80 children.
Last year Fremont Street Experience gave $15,000 in grants to five Las Vegas elementary schools to use for computer supplies and books.
Booker Elementary students came up with the idea of the courtyard.
Junior League offers help for teachers
Public and private schoolteachers who have developed innovative classroom projects have until Oct. 22 to apply for education grants provided by the Junior League of Las Vegas.
The projects are judged based on 10 criteria including creativity, learning enrichment and school participation. Grants will be awarded in December.

Day school planned for Jewish community
The Partnership for Excellence in Jewish Education awarded a one-year planning grant of up to $50,000 to the Jewish Community Day School to be used to plan and secure resources to create a middle school.
The national grant is to be matched from funds raised by the school. The day school is not affiliated with any synagogue and is seeking contributions.
The planning grant program is part of group's national initiative to expand and establish Jewish day schools of high caliber across the United States.

Immunizations
Health District immunization clinics are open each week in Southern Nevada. Immunizations are provided without charge to children and young adults under the age of 21 in any of four public health centers and 36 satellite clinics. The following clinics will be open this week, Sept. 29 through Oct. 5:
DISTRICT HEALTH CENTER: 625 Shadow Lane, 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.
NORTH LAS VEGAS PUBLIC HEALTH CENTER: 3262 Civic Center Drive, 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.
HENDERSON PUBLIC HEALTH CENTER: 129 W. Lake Mead Drive, Building A, Suite 10, 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.
EAST LAS VEGAS PUBLIC HEALTH CENTER: 560 N. Nellis Blvd., Suite E12, 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.
GREEN VALLEY CLINIC: Green Valley Library, 2797 N. Green Valley Parkway, 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Friday.
CHEYENNE I-3 CLINIC: Centers for Healthy Families, 3266 Las Vegas Blvd. North, No. 12, 9 a.m.-noon Friday.
FREMONT MEDICAL CLINIC: 4880 S. Wynn Road, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday. Immunizations free to anyone who walks in.
