Letter: LVCVA editorial should go further

Monday, Sept. 27, 1999 | 8:51 a.m.

Nevada's underfunded educational system is one of the lowest ranked in the nation. It took a tax hike to increase the extremely low number of parks in our city. Crime and traffic are out of control. Our county can't even meet the air quality standards required of it.

It is for these reasons that I believe Weidner's call to eliminate the LVCVA and delegate room tax dollars to our community's needs is a good idea that deserves some thought. Money does not solve everything, but it may in our case help solve some of these problems. And with all the talk of ballot initiatives to increase taxes it seems to me that if our government doesn't find a better way to use the money it already has, we'll all be paying more in the end.

The Sun's editorial completely failed to address what seemed to be Weidner's point -- that the megaresorts themselves are what truly drive visitation to Las Vegas. It makes sense to me. Why are we dedicating tax dollars to an agency that is duplicating work already done by the Strip casinos.

No one really believes that the LVCVA's advertising fills the smaller, lesser-known hotels.
