Letter: DMV leaders must be held accountable for problems
Monday, Sept. 27, 1999 | 8:50 a.m.
I had to submit a change of address, by mail, for my driver's license on Aug. 1. After three weeks I had not received a response and when I went into the DMV (before its new computer system, Genesis, had begun) I submitted another change of address into the very hands of our dazed and confused public employees. By Sept. 21 I had yet to receive my change of address.
I concur that it is not the fault of those working at the bottom, but isn't it always the case that subordinates pay for the decisions of bad management? The term "bad management" would be a compliment to those responsible. I deplore incompetence but it is something we must all endure as long as the system continues to give responsible jobs not to those qualified but to those with "friends in high places."
It's time we hold those accountable for their incompetence and rid the public sector of unqualified help just as my boss would fire me in a heartbeat were I to extend the same quality of customer service we receive from our government agencies.
