Judge takes motion under advisement

District Judge James Mahan took a motion for summary judgment under advisement Friday in the Las Vegas Convention Center expansion case after hearing differing interpretations of a new law.
Mahan is expected to rule on the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority motion later this week.
The LVCVA is attempting to use revenue bonds to pay for a $150 million expansion to the Las Vegas Convention Center South Hall.
The LVCVA motion is based on a statute approved by the Nevada Legislature earlier this year giving convention and visitors authorities greater latitude in the use of revenue bonds they authorize.
The Venetian, a private competitor for convention business that is suing the LVCVA, contends that the bonds actually are a form of general obligation bond that would require a public vote. At issue are interpretations of the words "payable from" and "secured by" in the new legislation.
