Letter: Public disfavors deconsolidation
Sunday, Sept. 26, 1999 | 9:44 a.m.
We voted for the Metro consolidation, we voted for a sheriff to represent us and we voted for our mayor and our councilmen. Now they, for their personal agenda, want to railroad the public by taking council action to split apart the police department.
Their detention man is the highest paid law person in Nevada -- he makes more than Metro's sheriff or the sheriff in Northern Nevada. Where is the equity here? Why not look at their staffing for cost-cutting?
If the city believes this action would be cost-cutting, why not provide an "unbiased" report, lay out the facts and put the issue to a vote by the citizens? Who is representing us? This isn't a request from their constituency, it's a vendetta.
The city further states that it will privatize nonessential departments. If what it's done with their parks program is any indication, we are in deep trouble. Tax inequity vs. public safety? I know how I'll vote.
