Letter: Congress needs to look ahead
Sunday, Sept. 26, 1999 | 9:47 a.m.
In giving money back to the rich, are the Republicans saying we are not going to have any more major disasters like this hurricane season? Are they saying we will not be involved in international military or disaster relief which befalls the world community? Are they saying that our economic growth will continue at this unprecedented level?
Forget their story that the Democrats will spend it foolishly; after all, the Republican control Congress. They can prevent any such programs from getting off the ground.
Congress needs to forget the one-upmanship of politics and see that the national debt is reduced, that the programs currently in place, like Social Security and Medicare, are adequately funded and solvent. They need to establish reserve/contingency pools to take care of any unforeseen eventuality that might occur.
They have been fooling around with the tax proposal to the extent that at the end of this fiscal year they will not have completed action to fund the various appropriation bills. They will end up with a "continuing resolution." Really, no big surprise.
