NCAA continues review of Rebel men’s basketball
Friday, Sept. 24, 1999 | 10:40 a.m.
The UNLV athletic department has announced that the NCAA is continuing the preliminary review of its men's basketball program. The preliminary review into allegations of violations in recruiting and extra benefit legislation began on March 23.
NCAA rules mandate notification to an institution undergoing a preliminary review at the end of the initial six-month period. Should no determination be reached regarding the investigation in the next six months, the NCAA's Division I Committee on Infractions will decide whether the preliminary inquiry should be continued.
Once the NCAA completes its preliminary review, it can either close the matter, notify UNLV that it believes a secondary violation(s) has occurred or issue an official inquiry. "We are treating this inquiry as a serious matter," UNLV President Dr. Carol Harter said in a statement. "I have been assured that the cooperation of everyone at UNLV is complete."
"Unfortunately, these matters often take a tremendous amount of time to review," UNLV athletic director Charlie Cavagnaro said. "My experience on the NCAA Council tells me that it is unusual to complete a preliminary review in less than six months."
Added UNLV men's basketball coach Bill Bayno: "We continue to believe we are operating our program within both the letter and spirit of NCAA legislation and look forward to answering any and all questions the NCAA may have."
