Letter: Covering up not the answer
Friday, Sept. 24, 1999 | 11:51 a.m.
In regard to Ron Kantowski's column about covering the grandstands at Indy Racing League events ("Speedway officials should instigate a big cover-up," Sept. 21):
I suppose anything's worth a try but I don't think hiding the grandstands would work.
In racing, shams are pretty easy to spot, and unfortunately for the IRL, too many people have made a thing of checking out the stands at both IRL and CART events for follow-up finger-pointing rants. It has gotten to be something of a contest now to spot and add up the empty stands. And the TV folks have been equally creative at positioning cameras in directions aimed at minimizing views of the stands.
It's an interesting game, isn't it?
