Letter: Americans must stand together

To avoid paying taxes, churches currently file with the IRS as nonprofit corporations. Consequently, they are usually silent as they do not wish to compromise such a tax status. This year we watched the Christian Coalition be forced to reorganize for speaking out politically.
In the early 1990s, the pope was quoted in the Chicago Tribune as calling for Christian unity. I thought then he had a good point and I still do.
Maybe, if moral people would focus on what they have in common, rather than fall prey to divisive tactics, we could change the direction our country appears to be taking. The complacency of the common person will surely dictate a society that tolerates more than it should. The result will be the end of America as we once knew it not so long ago.
United we stand, divided we will keep falling.
