Process for hiring of police chief on hold

Wednesday, Sept. 22, 1999 | 11:48 a.m.

The search for a new Henderson police chief will have to wait, at least for now.

The Henderson City Council voted at Tuesday's meeting to postpone a decision to hire a consulting firm that would conduct a nationwide search to find a replacement for former Chief Tommy Burns, who retired last month.

Former Capt. Mike Mayberry, who has been with the Henderson Police Force since 1978, has been acting police chief since Sept. 9.

The decision was made to postpone the hiring of the consulting firm of Hughes, Perry and Associates, because Henderson Mayor Jim Gibson was absent from Tuesday's City Council meeting.

The City Council was slated to vote on whether or not to approve the $20,000 contract to hire the firm to conduct the search. The firm was used to fill the positions of human resource director and economic development manager, City Manager Phil Speight said.

"We feel it will be a very successful search (for new police chief), and a lot of applicants will want to come to the city of Henderson," Speight said.

The search is expected to take about four or five months, Speight added.

"I imagine that it would be January or early February at the earliest," he said. "Once funds are approved, we would like to sit down with the consulting firm and profile the ideal individual for the position, but that's still a ways off."

Mayberry said he plans to be among the applicants for the permanent position.

"I look forward to going through the process," Mayberry said.
