Weekend event will benefit charities

The Las Vegas National Barbecue will be held Thursday through Sunday at the Sunset Station hotel-casino.

Thursday is Make a Wish Foundation's opening night, featuring local television, radio and print celebrities cooking with the teams. Admission is $10 for all-you-can-eat ribs, with proceeds going to Make A Wish.

Friday will feature the pig races for the National Barbecue Championship, plus jazz night with former members of the jazz group the Rippingtons, now playing as Steve Reid and the Bamboo Forrest. The concert benefits the Brain Injured Children of Southern Nevada.

Saturday and Sunday will feature live music and barbecue. Gates open at noon. Call 798-8345.

Help needed for 1999 Memory Walk

The Alzheimer's Association, Southern Nevada chapter is holding its 1999 Memory Walk on Oct. 16 at Paseo Verde Park in Green Valley.

The chapter is looking for volunteers to help the day of the event. Volunteers are needed to set up tables, chairs and signs. Other jobs include setting up and distributing food, juice and water, directing participants where to go and cleaning up after the event is over.

The chapter will hold an orientation for volunteers 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday at 5190 S. Valley View Blvd., Suite 101. Call 248-2770.

Plumbing engineers to hold annual event

The Southern Nevada Chapter of the American Society of Plumbing Engineers will be holding its third annual golf tournament Friday at the Revere Golf Course at Anthem.

The funds raised from the tournament will fund scholarships for local students. Spots are still open. Call 222-9677.

Visitors invited to mountain man activities

Members of the Spring Mountain Free Trappers will present a primitive camp and events on the colorful life of mountain men and women from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at Spring Mountain Ranch State Park.

Participants will be in period costume. Events and demonstrations will include black powder rifles, making ammunition, knife forging, leather work, bead work, storytelling and more. Call 875-4141.

Wills and estates

A seminar on wills and estate planning is scheduled for 6 p.m. Thursday at the North Las Vegas Library, 2300 Civic Center Drive. Call 633-1070.

Family Hoedown

The Sunrise Community Center is having a Family Hoedown 4-9 p.m. Saturday at 2240 Linn Lane. Admission is free, with a small charge for food items and carnival rides. Call 455-7600.

Wellness Fair/Post-polio

A Wellness Fair will be held in conjunction with a post-polio conference 3:30-7 p.m. Saturday in the Four Queens hotel-casino, 202 Fremont St.

Recovery seminar

Jazz auditions

Students from Southern Nevada high schools are invited to audition for the Las Vegas All-Star High School Jazz Band, directed by Walter Boenig, 4-6 p.m. Monday and Tuesday at the Reed Whipple Cultural Center, 821 Las Vegas Blvd. North. Call 229-6211.

Boricua conference
